Kansanshi Dynamos FC suffered a 2–0 defeat to Zesco United FC in tCheir rescheduled Week 12 fixture of the MTN Super League played at Levy Mwanawasa Stadium on Saturday afternoon.
The result means head coach Mohamed Fathi is still searching for his first win since taking charge of the Abanga Boys, with the team now recording two draws and one defeat under his tenure.
Match Summary
Zesco United started with intent and nearly broke the deadlock in the 21st minute, but Kansanshi goalkeeper Banda produced a brilliant save to deny Shemmy Mayembe.
Kansanshi responded positively six minutes later when Mubiana Muleta threaded a superb through pass to Beby Musangala, whose goal-bound effort was blocked for a corner kick.
The breakthrough came just before half-time in the 45th minute when Amine Hiver rose highest to head home from a corner, giving Zesco a 1–0 advantage at the break.
The hosts maintained control in the second half and sealed the result late on. In the 87th minute, Samson Ngoma doubled Zesco’s lead with a close-range finish following a defensive lapse.
Kansanshi continued to push forward and almost pulled one back in the 89th minute, but Willy Bokingo’s effort flew over the bar after a well-delivered cross from Rodgers.
Coach’s Reaction
Speaking after the match, Coach Mohamed Fathi felt his side competed well defensively but was undone by errors and missed opportunities.
“Defensively, we looked solid. The first goal came from a set-piece and the second from a mistake. Tactically, we did not concede from open play. We created chances in both halves but lacked experience and efficiency in front of goal.”
The coach also highlighted the absence of key midfielder Madinga, which affected the team’s build-up play, and acknowledged the need to strengthen the squad during the upcoming transfer window.
“Some players have adapted well to the MTN Super League level, but others are still adjusting. We need to bring in four to five experienced players to help the team, especially in defence, midfield, and attack.”
Despite the setback, Fathi remains optimistic about Kansanshi’s league position.
“The gap to the safe zone is not big. One or two wins can change the situation. We still have many games to play, and the story can turn in our favour.”
Former 2012 Africa Cup of Nations winner Collins Mbesuma, who was part of the Zambia national team that lifted the AFCON trophy in 2012, was in attendance at Levy Mwanawasa Stadium and took time after the match to encourage the Kansanshi Dynamos players.
Addressing the squad, Mbesuma urged the players to remain focused and confident despite the defeat.
“I watched your game and you are playing good football. Yes, you have lost, but that game is gone, focus forward. Learn the lessons and look ahead. You have a good coach and the way you are playing is positive. What is missing is being more forceful and hungry in front of goal. Scoring comes from desire. It’s about you as players wanting it. Don’t be discouraged and don’t look down on yourselves.”
