Kansanshi Dynamos Football Club sent a powerful statement in this year’s ABSA Cup as they thrashed Super League side Green Buffaloes FC 4-1 in a Round of 16 encounter played at Railway Stadium in Kabwe.
The fearless Mabanga Boys were in scintillating form as they booked their place in the quarterfinals, where they await the winner between Nkana FC and Arian Internazionale, who play tomorrow.
Kansanshi wasted no time getting into the action. In just the 4th minute, Mike Zizo delivered a well-taken free-kick, but the Green Buffaloes goalkeeper was alert to collect.
The breakthrough came in the 11th minute when Dalitso Lungu rose highest to head home after a pinpoint cross from Rodgers Lukonde, giving Kansanshi a deserved lead.
Green Buffaloes, however, responded in the 21st minute, capitalizing on a free-kick situation. After a rebound in the box, Lyson Banda reacted quickest to level the score.
Kansanshi continued to threaten, and in the 32nd minute, Mathews Mwale restored the lead with a powerful header from a well-crafted cross by Tranquilin Mwepu.
Before halftime, the Mabanga Boys had another scare as Green Buffaloes pressed forward. Lukonde was forced to clear off the line in the 42nd minute to maintain the 2-1 advantage going into the break.
The second half saw Kansanshi dominate proceedings. In the 50th minute, Brighton Kabumba made it 3-1, calmly finishing after a beautiful delivery from Mike Zizo.
Green Buffaloes tried to claw back into the match and nearly scored in the 60th minute through Eric Chomba, but his strike smashed against the upright.
Moments later, Tranquilin Mwepu was brought down in the box, but the referee waved play on amid loud penalty shouts.
Substitutions followed as Kansanshi looked to manage the game. Dalitso Lungu made way for Dave Daka in the 71st minute.
In the 75th minute, the electric Kizito Kezeron sealed the result with a thunderous finish off a clever pass from Kabumba, capping a man-of-the-match performance.
Late substitutions saw Ignitius Kalunga replace Kalonji Mwepu, while Titus Chivunga came in for Mathews Mwale to help see out the game.
Speaking after the match, Kansanshi head coach Zeddy Saileti was full of praise for his team’s performance:
“It was a good game. We were planning to press high and played according to plan. It’s big motivation for us beating a Super League side.”
With the win, Kansanshi Dynamos continue their strong campaign, not only chasing promotion in the National Division One League but now eyeing ABSA Cup glory as well.
